The following story can help set the stage for the alternatives that you'll find on page 2.
Jane, one of 300 million average American's lived a comfortable life in the city. Then one morning she awoke to a bright hot sun streaming through a window and she noticed that the air was dry and dusty and there were sounds of goats with clanging bells. Then setting up, thinking where am I ? She noticed that her dress was old and tattered and that she had been lying on straw laid out on the dirt floor. Then as she got up and looked out the door, she saw women lifting their water jugs and heading down the road. Seeing no other options in the small village and wanting to find out what in the world was going on, Jane picked up a water jug and followed. After two hours they returned with heavy jugs of water. Along the way Jane was told that the water must be boiled and that their next trip that day would be to buy firewood and food.
After a bit of a rest they headed down the road on a walk that turned out to be four hours long. The cost of the wood and grain took the only dollar Jane found in her pocket. After returning home Jane boiled the water and cooked some grain for a meal. Then she was told that it was time to go to work making baskets and that on an average day she could earn a dollar.
Then suddenly, Jane woke up realizing she'd been dreaming about an article she'd read which explained that half the worlds population, some 3000 million people survived on a dollar a day and had no hope of a better life.
Then Jane began thinking? What if someone could show them how to build simple solar collectors so that they would not need to buy fire wood. And what if they had affordable green houses where they could grow food and recycle much of their water? Then they would have time to earn a bit more money to get ahead and perhaps with some vision there would be less fighting and wars.
Then Jane started thinking about her own job security? Everything was going to automation and many things she use to do were now done by the computers or out sourced and what about retirement? And Jane realized that it was time to start making changes and promoting good ideas for a better world.
